Building Bridges of Hope: Inspiring Encounters with Cambodian Children

In July 2022, I had the incredible opportunity to visit Cambodia and spend time with children as part of a mission team. The purpose of our trip was to provide support to those in need, and despite the difficult circumstances they faced — living on a dumpsite, being parentless, and impoverished — the children always had a bright smile on their faces.

At the beginning, I couldn't understand their language since I was not familiar with it. However, we found ways to connect and bond through dancing, singing songs, and worshiping together in various locations. Even when we couldn't fully understand each other, we communicated through gestures and expressions. Our shared faith in Jesus Christ made it easy for us to sing together, bridging any language barriers that existed.

During our time together, I had the pleasure of teaching the children how to make necklaces using fruit rings cereals. I became quite popular among them as I distributed the cereal. (It was a moment in which I experienced the universality of capitalism. LOL) The children's smiles and their eyes are what truly stayed with me. As I prepared to leave, they eagerly awaited me in the playground, offering me their heartfelt drawings as a gift. Among the many gifts I've received, these drawings hold a special place in my heart, filling it with love and warmth.

Working alongside the team dedicated to helping the children in Cambodia has been an immense privilege.

Naturally, I took on the role of designing various elements for our team. For a long time, I struggled with self-doubt and my relationship with design, particularly after the loss of my older sister. Nevertheless, this experience proved to be the most fulfilling for me as a designer. I am grateful to have found a renewed sense of purpose in my work.

It felt almost serendipitous to meet these remarkable children. Their clothing, food, and living conditions mattered little in comparison to their precious and radiant spirits. I am genuinely curious about their future, and I am eager to invest in their potential by embarking on a project dedicated to their well-being in the near future.

Meeting new people has always been one of my favorite ways to gain a deeper understanding of the world. Having the opportunity to connect with the children in Cambodia and our team has been a truly enriching experience. I am committed to using my skills for positive and impactful endeavors, and I look forward to contributing to more meaningful projects in the future.
